I’m a April 1994 Bachelor in Accountancy graduate. What are the requirements needed for me to be allowed to take the CPA board exam?
Hi Precy,
Even though you have graduated on the year 1994 if you have graduated under the degree of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy you can still take the CPA licensure exam. But since there are lot of changes in the standard maybe it is good for you to take some accounting subjects or have a rigid review.
I am a graduate of BS in Business Administration major in Finance and Accounting Management (not required to take the board) but I am so eager to acquire a cpa license. I reviewed a BS Accountancy curriculum and compared it to mine. I learned that I still lack some accounting units and auditing subjects.
Now what bothers me most is: am I required to re-enroll and graduate BS Accountancy Course in order for me to qualify the cpa exam (this means starting all over again… taking tons of minor subjects in BSA and **RETAKING** some of my uncredited accounting subjects, i.e. if mine doesn’t match the other school’s subject descriptions or no. of units)
OR
I only need to take the lacking subjects? (wish this option applies, I don’t want to retake my acctg subjects and spend 3 more years in college)
Please help me. thx

Hi Ronnel
Beforehand, let me thank you for visiting my blog and to answer your questions.
Quote:
“am I required to re-enroll and graduate BS Accountancy Course in order for me to qualify the cpa exam”
— Yes, according to the Philippine Accountancy Law of 2004 you have to be a graduate of BS Accountancy course to be able to take the CPA licensure exam.
Quote:
“this means starting all over again. taking tons of minor subjects in BSA and **RETAKING** some of my uncredited accounting subjects, i.e. if mine doesn’t match the other school’s subject descriptions or no. of units”
— No, You do not have to take all those minors subjects. Subjects such as English, Filipino, Basic Math, PE, Humanities, Soc. Sci and other minor subjects. Some minor subjects for the BSA curriculum are the same with the Business Administration major in Finance and Accounting Management course like the management, marketing and finance subjects. There’s no problem regarding similarities of subject description because most of the time the Accountancy chairman(who will check your subjects to be accredited) knows what are the equivalent subject from other school with their own subjects. In case there are differences with the number of units you really have to retake the subject.
Quote:
“I only need to take the lacking subjects? (Wish this option applies, I don’t want to retake my acctg subjects and spend 3 more years in college)”
–Every school has it’sown standard on the passing grade for the BSA curriculum. If your accounting grade has reached or passed the required grade then you do not have to retake that accounting subject.
I hope I have answered all of your questions. Feel free to visit again in case you need more help.
Hi. I was browsing the net when I saw this query of mine. I would like to thank you for enlightening me 7 years ago. I took BSA as you suggested and passed the CPA board last July 2014. Thank you. 🙂
#nostalgic
Thank you so much, Ronell.
Hi, im just wondering if there is a university in the philippines that offers Bs in accountancy night classes or every saturdays. For those who are working but would like to try to take the cpa exam. I am an I.T graduate and was wondering if there is a possibility.
Yes, I am a graduate in business with the accouting requirements in usa. I would like to take the cpa board exam (asssuming education requirments are met) however i am not a Phillipine citizen. Does a waiver exist for non Phillipine citizens from the USA?
Hi Calvin, I appreciate your desire to explore the accountancy profession even though you’re already an I.T. professional. About your query, I’m sorry but I don’t know a school that offers that kind of curriculum for not all subjects are offered at night. For higher years(3rd to 4th in my school), some major subjects are offered at night but majority are offered at morning or afternoon.
In my case, I’m a graduating accountancy student who is fond of I.T./multimedia arts’ stuffs and also planning to explore I.T. for it will help me in one of my chosen career, Certified Information System Auditor(CISA) and also I want to engage my self in making EDP systems, for which I believe that is also the major reason why you want to explore Accountancy.
I suggest, study at morning/afternoon then work at night, that is possible but risky.
God bless you in your undertakings, and I hope we could meet someday and create our own Accounting software. 🙂
Hi,
I’m currently taking up BS Business Economics. I was just wondering if I’ll still be eligible to take the CPA, if I minor in Accounting. Thing is, accounting subjects are required in this course, it’s just that minor-ing in it will kind of make it more official. Will the said minor-ing in it be considered as an “equivalent of BS Accountancy”?
Thanks!
Hi Arianna
You must have a degree in Accountancy to be able to take the CPA Board exam. If you really wanted to take the CPA Board then you are a 1st or 2nd year student, then you can shift to Accountancy but if you are in your 3rd or 4th year then maybe you can graduate with your recent course then just proceed Accountancy.
Good thing if you have minor accounting subjects because this can be accredited if you decided to pursue accountacy, just make sure to get high good grades in this accounting subjects. Also the CPA board exam in its Management Accounting Services subject is touching economics during the board exam so this is an edge for you.
Hi, I am a graduate of BSBA major in accounting yr 1993. Currently I am taking my review @ CPAR. Last Apr 13, 2011 I went to PRC to apply, I was so depressed because upon processing the people in charge told me that my course is not valid. She advice me to update my course into BS Accountancy. My regret is that the CPAR management did not inform me in upon entering into their school. I spent almost 5 months, paid in full my tuition fee, buy books, and sacrifice my time in work and in my family. Up to now I felt so down & my health was affected.
i am a 2002 BS Accountancy grad but I got married immediately and was not able to have my review…are there a lot of changes in the curriculum?
Hi Flor
Yes, there are lots of changes in the curriculum. You better check the latest IAS for guidelines.
hi, i am 2002 graduate in BS Accountancy, what are the requirements for taking a board exam? how much would be the fee?
thanks
Hi Lyn
Do you mean the Steps in Applying for the CPA Board Exam ?
hi! for now m contemplating to tke oct 2011 cpa exam but cnt avail of d review class due to work. jst wanna ask if in d past there hv been candidate/s hu hv succesfully passed d exam wth out undergoing a tedious review class? where in manila d exam usually held n s there a hotel nears to d testing place? hpe u cud suggest more toward this desire of mine. thanks!
Hi al
Yes, there are candidates who have passed the CPA board exam without having formal review. What I have learned is that they are doing rigorous self review at their home because they are effective that way.
Just a simple advice, there are now review centers that offers night classes, and if you still is not available then you can enroll on an online review I think PRTC is offering it. If you have chosen to do a night review then it is better to take a leave a month or two before the actual CPA board to really condition your self. I also encourage you to join an accounting forum, this forum consist of CPAs, reviewers, reviewees and also students that will give you big help to achieve your dream to become a CPA. Just log in to pinoycpa.com and do not forget to put Gzell in your referral.
Regarding your question about where does the exam takes place this is what a friend (MR. B in pcpa) told me “actually the selection of the schools are based on some arrangements with BOA especially as to fee… cyempre d naman libre un paggamit ng facilities…” Eugene also a member of pcpa gives this list of school : UE, MLQU, La Consolacion, Holy Spirit at St Paul (the conditionals are taking the exam here). The CPA board exam last October 2010 has also taken place here.
Regarding your question about a place to stay, I think there are lots of places for you to stay near these schools. I will just post as soon as I gather some informations.
budget hotel… i apreciate much f u can name any wth in your knowledge. ty again.
Hi Geemiz
I graduated with BSC Major in accouting in 1990. Can I take the board exam in Nov.2011? What are the requirements in my case?
Hi Oldtimer
If given a chance, is this your first time to take the CPA board?
The thing is, if you have taken the CPA board before and failed, you can still take the CPA board exam right now, but if you have not taken the board yet then you are not allowed to take the exam unless you opt to study BS-Accountancy and graduate with that degree.
I am a government employee and planning to take again the CPA board exam in the future. Could I ask a list of schools offering a refresher course in Accountancy in the Phils.?
thanks. more power!
Hi Leila
From where are you?
You may want to inquire the schools near your place if they are offering a refresher course,
there are also instances that a review center is offering a refresher course if a accredited school offers them to do so but after taking the refresher course in the review center you are obliged to take an exam.
Hi, I am a BSC Mgt Acctg 2005 graduate and also earned MBA course program last 2008. I try to enroll myself into BS accountancy (in order for me to take CPA exam) after my MBA degree in the same school. I was wondering why all my MBA subjects were not credited in fact, most of that have the same description and higher than the subjects given to me when I try to enroll myself in accountancy. Do I need to take that subjects again? which is lower than my MBA subject taken, example economics (managerial economics for MBA). pls
Hi.. I am a 2008 graduate of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy… am i still qualify to take the exam and do i need to to take a review on a review center before i take an exam.
thanks. God bless!
i am a bsc graduate 1988,i took the board in may2006,oct2006 n may 2007 but failed.can i still take the exam?
Hi Joan
Yes you can still take the CPA Board Exam but you must first take a refresher course.
hi. i am a BSBA major in accounting graduate. I took the exam last Oct. 1993 but unfortunately i failed. its been 18 years since then. can i still qualified to take the exam without going to a refresher course? right now i am working in a government – accounting office. i want to take the exam but i cant be in a formal review class due to work. hope you can help me decide if i will pursue it without leaving my work. Tnx!!
Hi Yoly
you must take a refresher course from an educational institution for a degree of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy
or in a review school that is offering a special refresher course that is authorized by the Board
hi! i completed bs commerce major in accounting in 1991, can still take the cpa board exam? i also have a master’s degree in business ad,, i am 42 now.
Hi Adrian,
Sure you can take the CPA Board exam but you must first enroll in a refresher course in an educational institution or you may want to enroll in a review school that is authorize by the board
I have taken the board exam and failed in 1993. Thanks a lot!
what is the difference between bachelor of science in accountancy and bachelor of science in accounting technology? As of now i am a graduating student of BSAT and i want to take the cpa exam. wht are those subjects i do still needed to take to earn bsa?
If you don’t have BS in Accountancy but have Masters in Accounting in the US, will i be eligible to take the CPA exam in the philippines? My BS is in Civil Engineering in the Philippines.
Hi James,
To be able to take the CPA exam you must first graduate with a BS-Accountancy degree course in the Philippines. Ra, 9298 – Accountancy Act of the Philippines “a holder of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy conferred by a school, college, academy or institute duly recognized and/or accredited by the CHED or other authorized government offices“
Just in case I have a chance to take the CPA board, will PRC allow me to take even though I have another license from another board (field of profession).
Hi Girby,
yes, it is okay take the CPA board exam even if you have other license already, taking into consideration that you have graduated with a degree in BS-Accountancy in duly accredited education institution in the Philippines.
I have taken the CPA Board Exam twice and failed. A person is required to take refresher course, right? Can I take the refresher course from a Review Center instead of School? Do I need to get a certificate from the review center that I have finished/taken 24 units and present it to PRC?
Hi senivaj,
R.a 9298 or the Accountancy Act of the Philippines states
“Any candidate who fails in two (2) complete Certified Public Accountant Board Examinations shall be disqualified from taking another set of examinations unless he/she submits evidence to the satisfaction of the Board that he/she enrolled in and completed at least twenty- four(24) units of subjects given in the licensure examination. Provided, That such refresher course shall be offered only by an educational institution granting a degree of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. Provided Further, That the candidates shall have the option of taking the aforesaid subjects in the regular course offering or in a special refresher course duly accredited by the Board.”
The refresher course must be taken in an educational institution granting a degree of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, today schools have arranged with review centers to handle refresher courses for them and you must take an exam as a conclusion from the refresher course before the partner school will give you a certificate.
Hi,
I graduate in 1993 with a degree of Bachelor of Commercial Science major in Accounting. I was able to take the exam in 1994 but failed. Is taking a refresher course in PRTC enough to allow me to take the board again? Thank you.
Hi Malen,
I would suggest that you take refresher course in a school not on a review center. Review center refresher course is quite advance compared to schools, and in your case it is a decade already since your last encounter with academic accounting and there are lots of changes in PFRS and IFRS so you would really want to go back with the basic first and the latest accounting changes before going on advance review or refresher course which can be attain in review centers.
Hi, I graduated a BSBA major in Accounting in 1991, but have not yet taken the cpa board exam, am I still qualify to take the board exam?
Hi Kaye
Thank you for visiting my site, as to your question, yes you are qualified to take the CPA board exam.
You may also know that there are now lots of changes regarding PFRS and IFRS so you may want to take a refresher course or at least have a rigid formal review.
Geemiz
hi, im a BSMA(management accounting) graduating student..am i allowed to take the board exam?? i want to take the board exam but i dont know if we’re allowed.
and what does the requirement • B.S. in Accountancy or its equivalent mean? thanks.
Hi Marg
As of the moment BSMA graduates cannot take the CPA board exam unless he/she will pursue the Accountancy degree. For you I would suggest that you pursue Accountancy if you really want to take the CPA Board. Thank you for visiting.. 😉
hi!
i’d like to ask if i can take CPA exam i graduate last 2006 – BSC Major in Management Accounting?when will be the next examination?thank you!
Hi! Im a graduate of BCS Accounting in 1993 and took the exam also in 1993 but i have failed. Can I take again the exam without taking a refresher course and only do an online review course or home review? what are the requirements and how much money required in applying for the exam? thank you
Hi Rowella
You really need to take a refresher course to be able to take the CPA board. Online review (which I know only PRTC offers) and home review is fine but it is way better to really have a review class in a review center. I think online review and review class has similar cost like at most 15,000 pesos.. Thank you for the visit
kindly help me also with the steps in processing…ty
Hi! I took the refresher course last september 2010, got the certificate but never attempted to take the cpa exams from that date until now. I am planning to take the exam this oct. 2011. Would there be any issue with regards to my qualifications to take the exam?
Hi Jona
There will be no issue for you in taking the upcoming CPA board. You have just to present your certificate to PRC together with other requirements.
hi! i failed twice in the board exams. i want to ask if i can take the board exam (ex.may 2012) after taking the refresher course (ex.nov 2011-may 2012) immediately? or is it required to enroll again and take the oct 2012 exams instead of may 2012? hop u cud answer this? and hopefully u can give me some advices..
Hi Chris
Yes you can take the board exam if you have received you certificate telling that you have completed the refresher course and had past the refresher exam.
I have a Bachelor degree and a Masters Degree in Accounting in the US. I am planning to go home permanently in the Philippines. I want to become a CPA there, my question is am I qualified to take the CPA board exam in the Philippines. If not, what do I need to do in order to qualify. Please advise. Thanks
Hi Brian
You must enroll in an Accountancy curriculum here in the Philippines before you can take the Philippine CPA board exam. Just chose what school to attend to.
hi!!! i just want to inquire regarding the acceptable valid ids for cpa board examinations. i can’t seem to find a list from the PRC. Is it necessary to go to the PRC office to get this list or i can access it through other ways? thanks..
Hi Anna
You can read the steps and requirements needed by PRC to be able to take the CPA board exam. regarding the ID I think they accept voters ID, postal ID, SSS or GSIS ID and drivers license.
I am degree holder of BS Accountancy, graduated last March 2011, i am currently taking my review in PRTC, Sampaloc Manila. My school did not give my Transcript of records for board exam purposes because i did not pass their preboard exam, thats why i cannot take the october 2011.. is that a valid reason? i want to take my chance.
Hi,
I just graduated in Canada with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting degree. Is that considered as an equivalent of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy? or do i need to convert my degree?
Please advice. Thank you.
Hi K
As far as I know you need to get an Accounting degree here in the Philippines to be able to take the CPA Board. My advice is try to visit any school and try if they can credit your subjects abroad.. 🙂
i am 40 and graduated in 1990 with bachelors degree in accounting. i was sidelined by motherhood but now i wish to continue where i left off. what are the steps i can make so i can be a CPA? should i go back to regular school or review centers will suffice? i want to fullfill a dream i put on hold. thank you very much and wish you well. God bless!
Hi Angela
The first thing you should do is enroll in a refresher course. Try to look for school near your place who offers Accounting refresher course.
hi! i have a problem regarding my NSO birth certificate. My family name was misspelled in my birth certificate and all my school records uses the one w/c is supposedly my correct spelled family name, i just want to ask if PRC would permit me to take the board exam?
Hi Jashmin
PRC is so strict regarding NSO birth certificate matters. You need a document to certify that the family name in your birth certificate is the same as your school records. You can ask help from a lawyer.
i took CPA board exam before, but i was not able to finished all the 7 subjects, unfortunate events happen in the last two days of the exam so i was not able to take the remaining 3 subjects, only the first 4 subjects but still failed in those 4 subjects….i’m planning to take again…if I fail in my second try, am i still eligible to take the board for the third time without taking a refresher course because my first try was not a complete CPA board exam…?
Hi Jay -M
You must take a refresher course before you can take the third board exam because you have already taken the CPA board exam two times and according to the rulings, an examiner must take refresher course if he or she has no success in taking the board exam twice.
I’m confused with the rules which states that”Any candidate who fails in two COMPLETE Certified Public Accountant board examinations shall be disqualified from”….can you share us your thoughts about the word “COMPLETE”….thanks and GOD bless…
Hi Jay -m
This statement ”Any candidate who fails in two COMPLETE Certified Public Accountant board examinations shall be disqualified from” means that if you fail two board exams.
complete here means you have taken all the subjects in the exam. There are times when an examinee fails because he did not take all the board subjects.
Hi. I just wanna ask if there’s a way for me to take the exams if i will not be able to pass my birth certificate on due date? Will PRC allow me? the processing for my birth certi will take 2mos and by that time the due date is over.
Hi Blez
As far as I know, you must comply all requirements with PRC to be able to take the CPA board. I do not know if this will work, try ask NSO a certification telling that you are processing your birth certificate with them and present that certification to PRC.
i will pass the CPA exams next year
Hi!
I am a BCS-Accounting graduate and I would like to take the board exam. Does this course qualifies for the exam? Should I take BSA also? Or any advise you can give? Thanks!
Regards,
Ella
Hi Ella
You should take an Accounting degree first before you can take the CPA Board Exam. You can go to any school you want for accreditation of your subjects.
What if I the degree I am holding is BS Managerial Accounting? Can I still take the board exam?
Hi Andrei
BS Managerial Accounting is a different curriculum from BS Accountancy. What you should do is to pursue the BS Accountancy course. The good thing about your course is that there are many subjects that can be accredited depending on the school you are planning to go to..
hi, i already took a refresher couse, then i failed again. just wanna ask can i take again another exam or should i need to take again a refresher course?thanks and more power!
Hi Cess
How many times have you completely taken the CPA board..
Thanx!
Same case with me. I already took a refresher and failed again. Do i need to apply fo another refresher course? I take a total of 4 complete CPA boards
Hi,
I have a BSA degree. I graduated last 2004 but did not take the board. Do I need a refresher course to be eligible to take the exam on May?
Thanks
Hi Emer,
Since 7 years have pass you need to take a refresher course before taking the board exam.
Is refresher course a requirement or an option, I graduated 10 years ago but didn’t take the board exam.
Hello.
Do you know schools offering refresher courses? I graduated 2002 and planning to take the board exams soon. Thank you.
Hi Jihan
Where are you located? There are many schools now offering a refresher course.
Please reply,
Zero base po pa ang computation ng CPA board exam?
I mean 50/100 will become 75%? Ganun po ba yun?
