Aloguinsan is a 4th class town in the province of Cebu located in the Midwest of the province approximately 59.1 km from Cebu City. It has over 5000 households and fishing is the community’s main source of living in fact 75% of all tropical commercial fisheries pass part of their lives through mangroves because it serves as nursery for small fish.

Together with other bloggers from Cebu Bloggers Society Inc. and I Luv Cebu we join IBM and RAFI in this advocacy of building a greener Cebu. We left Cebu City around 9:30 am and traveled around 2-3 hours to our destination.

Upon reaching in Poblacion Aloguinsan we stayed for a while in front of Aloguinsan Municipal Hall and waited for our transfer vehicle to Bojo River.

Before the commencement of the mangrove planting we visited Bojo River also known as the “Palawan in Cebu” and have our orientation about the benefits of mangroves, the 22 species mangroves found in Aloguinsan and the various species of birds in the place.

Bojo River Cruise
The Bojo River Cruise is one of the tourism projects of Aloguinsan where in you get to sail in a bangka paddled by an Aloguinsan local with a tour guide that speaks English fluently and is 100% knowledgeable about mangroves and the folktale of the Bojo River. Upon arrival we receive our complementary buko juice drink and homemade bread.

This is a very good experience for aside from the beautiful and peaceful scenery the volunteers will be able to appreciate why they have to plant the mangroves.

Mangrove Plantation and Maintenance

According by RAFI President Roberto E. Aboitiz, “Planting and maintaining mangrove forests greatly contribute not only in ensuring the balance in our ecosystem and the protection of our natural resources and people. It also helps in bringing back biodiversity, in developing eco-tourism, and sustaining socioeconomic development in our country. Thus, community-based initiatives are crucial in the preservation and nurturance of the environment.”

Mariels Almeda Winhoffer, President and Country General Manager of IBM said “This year will not simply be a milestone. Rather, it will be an opportunity to heighten IBM’s commitment to the country. We have been in Cebu for several decades now and we will continue to engage in partnership with Cebu to seize the opportunities and promise of Cebu today and the years beyond.”
