January is such a joyous month to the people of Central Visayas especially the Cebuano’s. Aside from celebrating New Year on January 1st and the Chinese which is mostly celebrated at January 26-29 depending on when is the first day of the first moon of the lunar calendar the grand celebration of Sinulog is also celebrated.
What is Sinulog?
The Sinulog festival is in honor of the child Jesus Sr. Sto Niño who is the patron saint of the whole province of Cebu. The festivity is one of the grandest, most colorful and culture rich festivity in the Philippines. The festival is held whole month long and even started on mid-December with some sidewalk Bazaar installed, but the main event is held during the third Sunday of January Each Year. The Sinulog is a ritual dance symbolizing the embrace of Filipino’s pagan past to Christianity.
How is Sinulog Celebrated?
The festival is open to everybody and provinces all over the Philippines are welcomed to join the Sinulog Street dance and interpretation contest which is the highlight of the festival. Bright colored costumes, face paints are all over including the rhythm of the trumpets, gongs and drums. During the festivity there is no place for vehicles. People are just walking on the street and a lot where also dancing.
Because of the history rich festivity the cultural event has also become a tourist attraction and during January Cebu becomes the tourist hub of the Philippines. If you are planning to visit Cebu and celebrates Sinulog and you have no one to stay too make sure to have an early reservation with the various hotels and lodging places as early as October because by the month of November most Hotels are already full of reservation.
