Steve Jobs – The Father of Digital Lifestyle

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple” – Apple –

Indeed the human race of today has lost a great man, a brilliant man whom we should be thankful for because of the portability of music and communication that he gave us.

I have known Steve Jobs way back 2008 specifically December 2008 when hubby gave me the book of John C. Maxwell entitled The 21 Irrefutable Laws of leadership. Steve Jobs is the example of the 8th law of leadership which is the “Law of Intuition”- It is a law that states leaders evaluate everything with a leadership bias.

According to John C. Maxwell leaders look at things differently. Leaders need not just to look on facts but as well as on instincts and here is why he made Steve Jobs as an example.

Apple was created in 1976 by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in a garage after 4 years the business went public selling 4.6 million shares but later on the business fluctuated. Jobs left apple in 1985 being pushed out in a battle with CEO John Sculley the former pepsi president and many CEO have followed like Michael Spindler and Gilbert Amelio but none re-established Apple.

In the year 1997 Apple asked help to former owner founder Steve Jobs and by then he used his intuitive leadership skills. Jobs know that improvement in Apple is impossible without a change in leadership so he dismiss two board members and replaced them with new ones. He also made changes to the executive leaders and fire company ad agencies and held competition among the three firms. One thing Steve Jobs did that shows how a good leader he is that when he created a strategic alliance with Apples archenemy Bill Gates.

“I called Bill and said Microsoft and Apple should work more closely together, but we have this issue to resolve, this intellectual property dispute. Lets resolve it.” The dispute was settled immediately. Gates promised to pay Apple and invest 150 million dollars in nonvoting stock and in due time Apple has regained its prestige it had over the years.

In 2001 Steve Jobs again showed his intuitive leadership skills. During that time most companies where into PDAs but Jobs was different he is more into music. When Tony Fadell approached Apple for the idea of MP3 player and a music sales company Steve Jobs embraced it even though many companies had rejected it. Fadell was hired by Jobs and both work on as what we know as iPod. One Apple employer said that when Apple started the iPod it had Ste Jobs 100% time and not all project get that. Jobs invest more time on iPod because he believes that there is something more and iPod innovation will grow and it was consistent with his vision of “digital lifestyle”.

Steve Jobs has been right sales have been increasing because of the phenomenal device and has exceeded computers sales even more. Apple was making a profit while other technology company has suffered. Over 10 million units of iPod was sold in the spring of 2002 and by the end of 2005 Apple possessed 75% of the world market for digital music players.

After realising the iPod Classic a press ask Steve Jobs if he has a plan on integrating video on iPods and Jobs answer is “No, because it can ruin the video quality and the users experience” after  releasing the iPod Nano on October 2005 iPod 5th generation known as the iPod video was released. This is the very first iPod that can play videos. Critics have asked why Jobs have integrated video on iPod when in fact he has said many times that iPod part can only play audio and well this is a strategy to discourage competitors from developing such a product.

Today we have not just iPod but we have iPod touch and iPhone. Steve Jobs has really leaved us a legacy and it is living a digital lifestyle.
